The Evangelism Readiness Matrix
An assessment tool to help Christians
improve their readiness to reach their world for Christ and
assess the readiness of their contacts for salvation and their
converts for discipleship.
Dr. Gregory K. Tyree, D. Min
This assessment tool is designed to help the serious soul-winner
in three areas: 1) Pre-Evangelism and the Christian (i.e.
the “communicator” of the gospel); 2) Evangelism
and the Contact (i.e. the one to whom the gospel is presented);
and 3) Post-Evangelism and the Convert (i.e. a person who
positively responds to the gospel, receiving Christ as Savior).
These categories are developed extensively in this assessment
tool, but in summary they are:
Christian:
The term “Christian,” for the purposes of this
tool, refers to the “soul-winner.” Other terms
that may be used are “communicator,” “evangelist,”
“witness(er),” etc. While all believers are “Christians,”
the term here is used for the one presenting the gospel to
a “lost” person, or non-Christian (sometimes called
a “pre-Christian”). In the companion book for
this assessment tool (Casting the Net: How to Lead Someone
to Christ) the Christian is often referred to as the “counselor.”
Contact:
The term “Contact,” for the purposes of this
tool, refers to the person to whom the Christian communicates
the gospel. Other terms may include “prospect,”
“pre-Christian,” “lost person,” etc.
In Casting the Net: How to Lead Someone to Christ, the Contact
is often referred to as the “counselee.”
Convert:
Generally speaking, a “convert” is a new Christian.
While the principles in the third matrix (Convert) are applicable
to any and all Christians, the soul-winner will usually apply
them to the people he himself leads to Christ. There are exceptions,
of course. The Convert may be called “the new believer,”
“the disciple,” or other such terms. In Casting
the Net: How to Lead Someone to Christ, the Convert is often
referred to as the “disciple,” “protégé,”
or other such terms, while the one doing the discipling is
called by such terms as “discipler,” “mentor,”
etc.
This tool is best used in conjunction with the book, Casting
the Net: How to Lead Someone to Christ, though the reading
of the book is not necessary. At any rate, the implementer
of this assessment profile must have a workable knowledge
of personal evangelism; i.e. the you must know how to lead
someone to Christ. This booklet will not address the methods
of evangelism, but rather help you identify the attitudes
of and readiness for the presentation of the gospel, in light
of both the presenter (Christian) and the receiver (Contact).
The idea of the tool is to help the serious evangelist (one
who evangelizes) understand where he or she stands as a presenter
of the gospel, and where his or her Contact(s) stands in relation
to his receptivity of the gospel. First, consider the three
categories of persons this assessment tool deals with, and
then take a look at the graphs (matrixes and scales) that
will help you identify your readiness for evangelism and your
contact’s readiness to hear the gospel. A third category,
“Convert,” is developed to help you in discipling
new believers, or to help them get discipled by someone else.
It is imperative that you understand that this assessment
tool approaches evangelism from the human perspective. It
by no means negates the sovereignty of God in salvation, or
the supernatural process of salvation. These insights are
merely meant to present factors that are at work as we see
them. Only God can save, and He does that apart from any “works”
that we do. This does not mean, however, that He does this
saving without calling us to do His work (i.e. He does His
work through us).
