Casting the Net: How to Lead Someone to Christ
A Theology, Philosophy, and Methodology
of Evangelism
Dr. Gregory K. Tyree, D. Min
While there is a plethora of books available about evangelism
and soul-winning, few deal with the topic in a modern context,
while retaining the time-proven and successful methodologies,
techniques, and ideologies of the past. In this insightful
and very practical book, Greg Tyree tackles just about every
issue that today’s churches face as they attempt to
“reach their world for Christ.”
This is no “quick-fix” or “formula-based”
treatise on evangelism; this is a thorough and effective “philosophy”
and “methodology” for leading individuals and
groups to Christ. Written for the layperson as well as pastors,
church leaders, and evangelists, this book is immediately
graspable and applicable. Filled with ideas, strategies, and
illustrations, Casting the Net is a book for every Christian
who is concerned about the fate of lost people- those without
Christ. Its sixteen chapters are summarized:
Ch. 1 - A Theological Basis for Evangelism
Gleaning from the Scriptures and applying its theological
truths, this chapter suggests reasons for, and develops a
biblical philosophy of, evangelism and soul-winning. Evangelism
and Soul-Winning are differentiated, merging the two approaches,
as two equally needed aspects of reaching the lost, thus eliminating
the bipolar view of the two outreach philosophies.
Ch. 2 - Jesus and His Followers and Soul-Winning
Jesus and His disciples were “soul-winners,”
not doubt about it! This chapter takes a brief look at passages
that support this idea and draws from them for practical application.
Ch. 3 - Reasons Christians Avoid Soul-Winning
Most of us have heard that 95% of Christians have never led
someone to Christ. This chapter tackles some of the obstacles
that have historically deterred Christians from “doing”
evangelism, and refutes the reasons for non-evangelism. Practical
insights are offered to help timid Christians be more confident
in sharing their faith.
Ch. 4 - Getting Ready for the “Harvest”
How can someone “get ready” to do evangelism?
This chapter helps the concerned Christian prepare him or
her self to more confidently reach people with the Gospel
of Christ.
Ch. 5 - Pre-Evangelism
“Pre-Evangelism” refers to the intentional desires,
goals, and steps taken “before” actually presenting
the Gospel. It is in essence an intentional method to “condition”
people to positively hear the Gospel and be offered an opportunity
to respond. This is a much-overlooked step, especially by
those who are of the “old school” of evangelism.
Ch. 6 - How to Lead Someone to Christ
While many people are fairly successful at “living”
their faith and perhaps engaging in “friendship”
or relational evangelism, many simply do not know “how”
to actually “lead” someone to Christ. This chapter
helps the believer do just that.
Ch. 7 - They’re Saved, Now What?
Churches and Christians are notorious for leaving “baby”
Christians to “fend for themselves.” This chapter
helps the soul-winner establish the new believer in his or
her faith, offering keen and practical insights for discipleship
and follow-up.
Ch. 8 - Your Spiritual Gifts and Evangelism
The Bible is clear that God has gifted each believer with
“spiritual gifts” that are to empower him or her
to fulfill God’s will in his or her life, to edify the
Church, and to glorify Christ. All of these spiritual gifts,
not just the gift of evangelism, can be used to bring people
to a saving knowledge of Christ.
Ch. 9 - Getting Your Church Involved in Soul-Winning
Christians who are passionate about reaching lost people
often become frustrated and discouraged by the seemingly lack
of interest by the church at large. This chapter offers such
Christians some practical advise in helping mobilize their
churches for effective evangelism.
Ch. 10 - Children and Soul-Winning
While God has only “one way” of salvation (not
a “grownup” way and a “kid’s”
way), it is no secret that reaching children has its own set
of challenges, obstacles and concerns. This chapter is a great
help for parents, teachers, and anyone who desires to see
children come to Christ at a tender young age.
Ch. 11 - Witnessing to Post-Moderns
“The world, it is a-changin’.” That’s
a fact. Today’s younger generation sees their world
through different eyes and must be reached accordingly. This
chapter delves into the meaning and ramifications of port-modernity,
and offers Christians help in reaching post-moderns for Christ.
Ch. 12 - Pastoral Evangelism
Sadly far too many pastors are either dispassionate and indifferent
about evangelism or
ill-equipped and otherwise incompetent at doing it. In this
chapter the author attempts to encourage, motivate, and equip
the pastor to both teach and actively do evangelism.
Ch. 13 - Finding Them and Keeping Them
While written with the pastor or lay-leader in mind, this
chapter will help any serious soul-winner to find “prospects”
to present the Gospel to, as well as help in assimilating
pre-Christian and new Christians into the church and keeping
them there!
Ch. 14 - What’s In It For Me?
Many people today want to know, “What’s in Christianity
for me?” While this question upsets many spiritual purists,
those of a more pragmatic nature understand what really lies
behind this question: a need to experience a “personal”
faith. This chapter presents some of the “benefits”
of following Christ, helping the evangelist to help people
“make the right decision.”
Ch. 15 - You (Almost) Cannot Fail
Written to encourage those engaged in evangelism, this chapter
maintains the idea that the only way a person can truly “fail”
at soul-winning is to simply “not try.” It is
God who does the saving, not the Christian. Therefore, each
believer should participate in the effort to reach the lost,
leaving the results up to God!
Ch. 16 - Evangelism in the Real World
This final chapter is the written testimony of someone who
was led to Christ by the author. It shows the reader “where
the rubber meats the road.”
WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK?
Anyone and everyone who seriously desires or hopes to desire
to reach lost people for Christ. It is that simple. This book
will help all to that end.
