Intentionally Turning Your Church Around
Seeing God Move Your Church from
Conflict and Decline to Health and Growth
Dr. Gregory K. Tyree, D. Min
This book is about leading an intentional turnaround church.
I propose ideas and strategies that can only be implemented
intentionally. Unlike most books about church turnaround,
this book has been written with an ongoing assumption: the
leaders and members of the turnaround church are entering
the turnaround process on purpose; the church is intentionally
embarking on this journey, and will move forward with a plan
to do so.
What is a Turnaround Church? Turnaround churches are those
that are at least one generation old and experience renewal
and marked growth in fruitful ministry after a lengthy period
of decline or stagnation. A turnaround church has also experienced
at least one “severe crisis” (Dr. Dan Young, Eight
Principles for Turnaround Ministry).
My book includes twenty chapters (with 58 charts and illustrations)
that will take Pastors, church leaders, and concerned laypeople
from the very beginning through the very end of the turnaround
process. The chapters are summarized as follows:
Ch. 1 - The Prelude to a Turnaround
This chapter helps you know if your church is in need of
turning around, and what level (severity) of decline you are
in. It includes several assessment tools to help you determine
this.
Ch. 2 - The Price of a Turnaround
Turning a church around does not come without its “price.”
This chapter helps you know if the pastor and the church are
ready to pay the price for the turnaround.
Ch. 3 - The Philosophy of the Turnaround
A church turnaround must be based on a solidly Scriptural
and practical philosophy. This philosophy will serve as a
foundation for the turnaround process.
Ch. 4 - The Power of the Turnaround
Churches often operate and even sometimes thrive by “human
power.” This chapter will help you know if God is the
Power behind your church’s turnaround.
Ch. 5 - The People of a Turnaround
How can a pastor or church leader know if their church is
ready for the turnaround process? This chapter will describe
the characteristics of a church that is ready to turn around.
Ch. 6 - The Pastor of the Turnaround
The key person God will use to turn a church around is the
Pastor. This chapter describes the type if man who can and
should lead the church to turn around. It is not for the weak!
Ch. 7 - The Permission for a Turnaround
How will you know if you have the “green light”
to embark on the turnaround process? This chapter will help
you answer that question.
Ch. 8 - The Precepts and Principles of Turnaround
This chapter lays out many precepts and principles that must
be understood and implemented to lead a church successfully
through a turnaround process. Every church will benefit from
these principles.
Ch. 9 - The Preparation for the Turnaround
If your church is ready to turn around, this chapter will
help you “prepare” for the journey. It includes
several surveys and questionnaires that the church and pastor
will complete to “get the church ready.”
Ch. 10 - The Process of Turnaround
The turnaround process includes no less than ten steps. This
chapter will explain and walk you through the ten steps of
the turnaround process.
Ch. 11 - The Plan for the Turnaround
Once the process is understood, each church must design a
“plan” that is especially geared toward their
particular situation. This chapter will help you with that
plan.
Ch. 12 - The Problems of a Turnaround
“Problems” are endemic in the turnaround church.
This chapter will lay out a plethora of problems you can expect
to encounter, with suggestions of how to overcome these expected
problems. This chapter will benefit every church.
Ch. 13 - The Prioritization of the Turnaround
One of the key weaknesses of Pastors is time management.
Excellent time management is a necessity, not an option for
the turnaround pastor. This rather lengthy chapter will help
the turnaround pastor prioritize his time and that of his
church.
Ch. 14 - The Peacemaking of the Turnaround
Conflict is indigenous to the turnaround process. This is
the lengthiest and probably the most important chapter of
the book. Managing conflict is paramount to the turnaround
process.
Ch. 15 - The Protocol of a Turnaround
Policies, church constitutions, and traditional protocols
often do not work in the turnaround situation. In some cases,
faulty protocols will actual cause decline and conflict, or
prevent the healthy turnaround of a church. This chapter helps
you overcome this problem.
Ch. 16 - The Participation in a Turnaround
How do you get people to “come along for the ride?”
How can you get them on board to support the turnaround process?
This chapter offers practical advice that will help you motivate
and mobilize your people to “participate” in the
turnaround.
Ch. 17 - Preaching and the Turnaround
Many turnaround leaders and pastors in general underestimate
the power of preaching. Preaching is one of the key elements
in the turnaround equation. This chapter will help you develop
a philosophy, strategy and schedule for preaching during the
lengthy turnaround process.
Ch. 18 - The Praise and Worship of a Turnaround
The way a church worships, and the reasons for those methods,
can make or break it, especially those churches in a turnaround.
This chapter will help you evaluate the myths of worship,
and apply healthy worship ideas and strategies that will help
you keep your church
in the presence of God!
Ch. 19 - The Product of a Turnaround
How will you know when your church has “turned around?”
This chapter presents the nine characteristics of a healthy
church.
Ch. 20 - The Postlude to the Turnaround
One of the key issues of the turnaround process is how to
keep the church “turned around.” This chapter
will help the turned around church maintain a healthy and
vibrant Christian community that glorifies God and blesses
he community!
WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK?
Any Pastor, church leader or church that desires to be renewed,
revived, or moved out of an extended state of conflict and
decline, as well as churches that want to stay healthy, will
benefit from this book.
