The Master's Peace
Understanding and Resolving Conflict in the Church
Dr. Gregory K. Tyree, D. Min
This is a book on church conflict. While it will be of great
help in almost any kind of conflict among Christians, it has
been written with church conflict in mind. It is not a book
about forgiveness. That is another complex issue. While the
book presents a summary of Christian forgiveness in the final
chapter, it is not within the scope of this book to elaborate
on it. Anyone seeking a thorough treatment of the subject
of forgiveness will need to refer to other works. This book
does deal extensively with Church conflict.
The Master’s Peace offers a summary treatment of conflict
management in the church. In addition to an extensive treatment
of the subject, the book includes many charts (found in the
appendices), which are vital to the understanding of some
of the principles set forth regarding church conflict.
From the Foreword…
Dr. Jim Leary says… Greg does not direct others while
sitting in a command center far from the battlefield. He labors
in the turbulent world of turning churches around. This gives
his book an air of authenticity. He knows how to grow healthy
churches and understands that handling conflict is one of
the keys. As you read his book, you will discover what prevents
many churches from reaching their God-given potential. You
will learn how to turn negative situations into opportunities
to glorify God.
I am sure many who read this book will say to Greg, "Thanks
for putting this in writing! I am going to change the way
I handle conflict so that our church can move forward!"
The chapters are summarized as follows:
Ch. 1 - The Reasons for Conflict
It is a fact that when it comes to conflict, knowing the
reasons for it is half the battle. In this chapter, the author
lists various reasons for church conflict, offering suggestions
for the “why” of conflict so the church can move
on to the “how” of conflict resolution.
Ch. 2 - The Roster of Conflict
Who are the people who cause conflict in the church? This
chapter summarizes the various persons and types of persons
who are most like to cause or participate in conflict, with
some very cogent examples of how to deal with these “well-intentioned
dragons!”
Ch. 3 - The Rise of Conflict
Tied very closely to the “reasons” for conflict,
this chapter helps the reader recognize when conflict has
reared its ugly heads, offering some timely advise to help
move the
church toward resolution.
Ch. 4 - The Reactions to Conflict
There is a difference between “reacting” and
“responding.” This chapter points out some of
the unhealthy ways people “react” o conflict,
helping Christians avoid the pitfalls of dealing badly with
and already bad situation.
Ch. 5 - The Response to Conflict
Unhealthy reactions having been exposed, the author now delivers
some healthy ways churches and individuals can “respond”
to conflict, providing for a proactive, instead of a reactive,
way to resolution!
Ch. 6 - The Resolution of Conflict
Now that the groundwork has been laid, steps toward true
resolution and reconciliation can be made. This chapter offers
some biblical and practical insight as to how to move from
conflict to resolution, making the church healthy and functional
again.
Ch. 7 - The Ramifications of Conflict
Conflict in church is a serious issue. Here, the author sets
forth some down-to-earth reasons to avoid conflict, as well
as some –eye-opening effects that a church in conflict
can expect. The bottom line: make church conflict resolution
a high priority!
Ch. 8 - The Remedy for Conflict
While even the healthiest of churches will experience some
conflict, there are some things that will help keep conflict
from rearing its head, or at least help to knock the ugly
head of conflict off! This chapter offers some sage insight
that should serve to encourage the church.
Ch. 9 - The Rewards of Conflict
Believe it or not, there are some “good” reasons
for and results of church conflict. This chapter will help
the reader see the silver lining around the cloud of church
conflict.
Ch. 10 - The Restoration in Conflict
While it is not within the scope of this book to offer a
thorough treatise on “forgiveness,” this chapter
delivers a summary treatment of this vital aspect of church
reconciliation and
church conflict resolution. Biblically based and compassionately
grounded, this chapter is a must-read for anyone in the trenches
of church conflict.
WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK?
Anyone with a genuine concern for the church and its health
will benefit from this book. Specifically, churches and church
leaders and members who are overwhelmed with conflict in their
midst will lean much here. Finally, those seeking a practical
